Kid Rock Finagles Promise From Romney in Pact to Perform

Tuesday, 28 February 2012 11:37 AM EST

Kid Rock’s campaign rally concert for Mitt Romney Monday night may have come at a steep price. Rock personally met with the former Massachusetts governor and Michigan native and got him to promise to help the state and the city of Detroit if he becomes president, The Washington Post reported.

Romney was looking to close out his Michigan campaign with a bang and personally reached out to Rock, whose song “Born Free” has become a staple of his campaign rallies. After flying in to Michigan after the Arizona debate last week, Romney went with two aides to Rock’s home in a Detroit suburb and met with him for an hour, the Post reported.

“He put a piece of paper in front of me,” Romney later recounted, according to the Post. “He’d written down some questions for me. He said, first of all, ‘Mitt, if you’re elected president, will you help me help the state of Michigan?’ And I said I would.”

“He said, ‘If you’re elected president, will you help me help the city of Detroit?’ I said I would. And then I turned to him, and I said, ‘By the way, given the fact that I’m willing to do those things, will you come here and perform a concert (on Monday) for my friends?’”

Kid Rock agreed the next day, so Monday night, Romney told 1,000 supporters at an event at the Royal Oak Music Theatre: “I’m happy to introduce a son of Detroit, a friend, a guy who makes great music, who introduces me . . . everywhere I go, Kid Rock!”
