Republican super strategist Dick Morris has endorsed GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney. But the backing comes not because Morris favors Romney over Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. Instead, Morris says he just wants to see an end to the primary fight so the party can focus on defeating President Barack Obama.
“It’s not a matter whether I like Santorum or Romney or Gingrich better,” Morris says in a
video on his website. “I don’t like one better than the other. I think they all have wonderful virtues. Romney really understands how to get the economy moving and will. Santorum is a pure conservative down to his soul. And Newt Gingrich is the smartest and most creative guy I’ve met in politics. ”
So why is Morris endorsing Romney? “The point is, it’s over,” he said. “We’ve made our choice. Romney has 54 percent of the delegates at this point.”
Some might argue whether that small majority with more than half the delegate total still to be allocated constitutes a race that’s over.
But, Morris says, “Anybody who votes for Gingrich or Santorum in Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, or Illinois is basically voting for a deadlocked convention, because there’s no way either of these candidates can win the nomination until the convention itself.”
And the nomination must be decided before the Aug. 27 convention to give the party enough time to beat Obama, Morris said.
