Romney Camp Reacts to Ross Perot Endorsement

Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:57 AM EDT

The Mitt Romney campaign has announced the support of businessman and former presidential candidate Ross Perot.

In announcing his endorsement, Perot said: “Our country faces a serious choice. The fact of the matter is that the United States is on unsustainable course . . . That is why I am endorsing Mitt Romney in his quest for the presidency. We can’t afford four more years in which national debt mushrooms out of control, our government grows, and our military is weakened. Mitt has the background, experience, intelligence, and integrity to turn things around.”

Perot further explained why America needs to elect Mitt Romney as the next president in an Op-Ed in the Des Moines Register. He said, “President Obama promised a great deal. He has had his chance. The results are visible for all to see. It is time for a new beginning. It is time for Mitt Romney.”

The Romney camp added that Tuesday's debate is another reminder of the clear choice voters face in this election between four more years of President Obama’s failed policies and a plan for real recovery under Romney.

They added that four years ago at the debate at Hofstra University, Obama promised to deliver a "new direction" on debt. But Obama ended up amassing more debt than any other president in history and presided over the nation’s first trillion-dollar deficits while the national debt surpassed $16 trillion — an increase of $5.5 trillion, according to the Department of the Treasury

Last week, the Obama administration confirmed the FY2012 deficit totaled $1.1 trillion — the fourth year of trillion-dollar deficits on President Obama’s watch.

The Romney camp added: "The latest posting by the Treasury Department shows the national debt has now increased $4 trillion on President Obama's watch. The debt was $10.626 trillion on the day Mr. Obama took office. The latest calculation from Treasury shows the debt has now hit $14.639 trillion. It's the most rapid increase in the debt under any U.S. president.”

The result of President Obama’s spending will be higher taxes on the middle class and more debt that the next generation will be forced to repay, the Romney camp concluded, citing data from the Treasury Department and the Office of Management and Budget.
