Romney Pollster Newhouse Cites Seven Key States

By    |   Wednesday, 06 June 2012 01:51 PM EDT

Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, and Virginia represent the seven key states for the presidential election, according to Neil Newhouse of Public Opinion Strategies, a pollster for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Newhouse listed the seven in a presentation he put together for Romney bundlers. “The route to 270 [electoral votes] goes through these states,” he writes in the report, obtained by Politico.

Newhouse cites the latest polls in each state, showing Romney ahead in Arizona, Florida, and Ohio; Obama ahead in Colorado and Nevada; and a tie in Iowa and Virginia. Romney has six percentage-point leads in Arizona and Florida, but no other state has a margin wider than two percentage points between the candidates.

Newhouse’s Power Point presentation also contains a Gallup poll showing that only 40 percent of Americans are satisfied with the opportunity for the next generation of Americans to live better than their parents.

There are also polls in the report showing that President Barack Obama’s approval rating has ranged between 46 and 49 percent over the last three weeks, with his disapproval rating ranging from 46 to 52 percent.

The presentation has a chart showing that the lowest approval rating for a president who won re-election since 1956 was 47 percent for George W. Bush in 2004. Gerald Ford lost his re-election battle in 1976 (to Jimmy Carter) with a 47 percent approval rating.
