Romney Maxes Out With Two-Thirds of Donors

Wednesday, 22 February 2012 11:26 AM EST

Mitt Romney has maxed out with two-thirds of those donating money to his campaign, a potential problem as the presidential primaries drag on. The former Massachusetts governor has reached the $2,500 limit with the bulk of his donors, The Wall Street Journal reported.

By contrast, chief rival Rick Santorum has maxed out with only 18 percent of his donors. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has maxed out with 16 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, with 11 percent.

While super PACs continue to raise millions supporting candidates through advertising campaigns, fundraising by candidates remains crucial. The money is needed to pay staff and other campaign expenses such as travel, items that the PACs are barred from covering, the Journal reported.
