WaPo: Romney Reassured Liberals on Abortion Rights

Thursday, 03 November 2011 02:08 PM EDT

Nine years ago when Mitt Romney was running for governor of Massachusetts he told abortion rights activists that not only would he protect state abortion laws but should he win he could use the position as a platform to soften Republican opposition to abortion. “You need someone like me in Washington,” he told them according to The Washington Post.

According to notes taken by an officer of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, Romney suggested that should he rise to prominence in the GOP he would be a “good voice in the party” for their cause, the Post reported.

“We felt good about the interview. He seemed genuine,” Nicole Roos, the NARAL official who took the notes and shared them with a reporter, told the Post. Melissa Kogut, the group’s executive director in 2002, told the Post that Romney was “emphatic that the Republican Party was not doing themselves a service by being so vehemently anti-choice.”

Aides to Romney, who is now anti-abortion, referred the Post to quotes provided the Los Angeles Times four years ago. “People’s memories change with time, and change depending on which way the political winds are blowing,” the quote said.
