Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney wasn’t at the Washington news media elite’s annual Gridiron Club dinner, but his name kept coming up — and not in a flattering way.
Musical numbers and politicians, including former presidential candidate Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, poked fun at the former Massachusetts governor during the fete Saturday night, according to
The Washington Post gossip column The Reliable Source.
One musical number, set to the tune of the Drifters hit “Up on the Roof,” brought up the tale of the Romney pet, Seamus, who was relegated to riding to Canada in a carrier on the roof of the family car.
A man in a dog suit sang the song, which included the lyrics, “When Romney world starts getting me down, And people are too much for me to face, I climb way up to the top of the car, And all my cares just drift right into space.”
Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said the Department of Defense “recently completed a 65-year project to develop a cutting-edge robot. Initial testing wasn’t good, but Mitt Romney’s performance is improving,” the Post reported.
Perry drew attention to his own habit of getting into verbal trouble on the campaign trail.
“Yes, I would say stuff like ‘Solyndra is a country,’ or ‘The voting age is 21,’” the Post quotes Perry as saying. “Mitt would say things like, his wife drives a couple of Cadillacs, or his pals own NASCAR teams. My problem was saying stuff that wasn’t right. Mitt’s problem is saying stuff that is.”
Perry brought down the house with a reference to an old television spot: “You know, it was weird standing next to him at the debates. I kept waiting for him to say, ‘Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon?’”
