Romney Avoids Specifics on Debt Supercommittee

Friday, 18 November 2011 06:38 PM EST

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is criticizing the deficit-cutting supercommittee process in Washington without saying if he'd support a plan that includes increased tax revenue.

Failure by the panel to produce a plan by Wednesday to cut deficits by at least $1.2 trillion over 10 years will trigger across-the-board cuts to the Pentagon and various domestic programs.

Romney told a New Hampshire audience Friday that that amounts to a deal with the devil. But he continued to avoid direct comment on a plan offered by Republican Sen. Pat Toomey that includes tax hikes.

Romney said he disagrees with Democrats who want to raise taxes but was silent on Toomey's plan. He took no questions from the media after the event and reporters were asked to leave before he did.
