Diebold to Build $100 Million HQ in Ohio

By    |   Friday, 13 January 2012 05:41 AM EST

ATM maker Diebold Inc. will remain in the Akron-Canton, Ohio, area, building its new $100 million world headquarters just five miles across town from its current location. The state granted Diebold a $56 million incentive package of tax breaks, grants, and loans to encourage it to reject offers from North Carolina and Virginia, reported the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The company will also receive $44 million in tax increment financing and other aid from the City of Green and Summit County entities, with the total amount expected to be enough to cover the entire $100 million construction price tag.

Diebold is buying a 55-acre tract near Akron General Hospital’s Health and Wellness Center, which will open its own construction in March.

The ATM maker plans to build a state-of-the art, 500,000-square foot building and corporate campus, which will consolidate 1,500 employees who are now split up between five separate facilities. Another 400 employees, who work in two other facilities, will remain where they are.

Thomas W. Swidarski, CEO and president of the Fortune 1000 company, said consolidating the operations will allow Diebold to recruit and retain top talent for its global network of high-tech ATMs and bank security systems.

Diebold’s new campus will include its corporate offices; research and development, sales and marketing, hardware and software engineering; customer service; employee training; financial and administrative operations and security-monitoring centers.

Diebold, which is 152 years old, began in North Canton and was founded by German immigrant Carl Diebold. The company’s bank business encompasses more than 90 countries, generating revenues of more than $2.82 billion in 2010, and it has a $125 million annual payroll.
