Romney Camp Seeks Va. Inquiry Into Voter Forms

By    |   Wednesday, 25 July 2012 10:35 AM EDT

Handlers for presumptive GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney are asking Virginia officials to investigate voter-registration forms sent by a Washington nonprofit group and addressed to people who are ineligible to vote.

Kathryn Bieber, an attorney for the Romney campaign, sent a letter to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and the State Board of Elections requesting that the mailings from the Voter Participation Center be investigated, The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

She claimed the mailings appeared to violate “at least one and maybe several Virginia laws aimed at ensuring a fair election,” The Times-Dispatch reports. The forms have been mailed to such Democratic-leaning voting blocs as young adults, unmarried women, African-Americans, and Latinos.

According to Bieber, the mailings represent “tactics that amount to, or at the very least induce, voter-registration fraud,” and says the issue “presents a very significant risk to the proper administration of the upcoming general election,” the Times-Dispatch reports.

Justin Riemer, deputy secretary of the State Board of Elections, said forms have been sent to deceased infants, out-of-state family members and non-U.S. citizens, among others.

Page Gardner, president and CEO of the Voter Participation Center, said nearly 200,000 third-party registration forms were mailed to Virginia addresses in June, resulting in 15,026 new voters being registered as of July 18, The Times-Dispatch reports.
