Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will leave his environmental group temporarily to lead president-elect Donald Trump's commission on vaccine safety.

Kennedy made the announcement to members of his group late Wednesday, Politico reported. Kennedy, who has publicly questioned if there is a link between vaccines and autism, announced the commission just after a Tuesday meeting at Trump Tower.

According to Politico, Kennedy said he is waiting "to see the transition team's detailed proposal before making my commitment final," but he must resign from Waterkeepers attorney because the job "requires me to criticize the president."

Kennedy added he wrestled with the decision because of his political differences with the president-elect, but "the complete lack of other credible leaders on this particular issue makes my decision necessary."

The Trump camp released a statement after Kennedy's initial announcement saying they had not yet decided on establishing an "autism" commission.

"The President-elect enjoyed his discussion with Robert Kennedy Jr. on a range of issues and appreciates his thoughts and ideas," Hope Hicks, spokeswoman for the Trump transition team, said in a statement according to The Washington Post. "The President-elect is exploring the possibility of forming a commission on autism, which affects so many families; however, no decisions have been made at this time.

"The President-elect looks forward to continuing the discussion about all aspects of autism with many groups and individuals."

Kennedy told reporters after meeting with Trump he was asked to look into "vaccination safety and scientific integrity," according to CNN.

"President-elect Trump has some doubts about the current vaccine policies, and he has questions about it," Kennedy added. "His opinion doesn't matter, but the science does matter, and we ought to be reading the science, and we ought to be debating the science."
