Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel and Labor Secretary Alex Acosta have backed out of appearances at the annual conference of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials, Politico is reporting.

NALEO is the largest nonpartisan Latino political group in the nation. Its conference is set to open in Phoenix on Thursday. McDaniel notified officials on Wednesday afternoon she would not be able to deliver her Friday address to the group, according to Politico.

Arturo Vargas, NALEO's executive director, said McDaniel's office gave no reason for her abrupt cancellation, but expressed her regrets.

Her cancellation comes after the controversy over separating children from parents, who enter the U.S. illegally at America's southern border. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to stop the separations.

"Getting this last-minute cancellation is deeply disappointing especially at a moment when the folks are gathering here are trying to understand what the direction of the country is," Vargas said.

He maintained the invitation to McDaniel had been extended in November and confirmed in recent weeks, the website reported.

An RNC official told Politico that her cancellation was due to "an unexpected scheduling conflict." The official noted the RNC is a sponsor of the event.

Florida state Sen. René García, a Republican and a NALEO board member, said: "It's disappointing to see the lack of action on our party, giving up the Hispanic voters to the Democrats. This is why it happens. You fail to show up when it counts."

Tom Perez, who leads the Democratic National Committee, is not attending this year's conference, but Maria Elena Durazo, the DNC vice chair, is speaking.

Meanwhile, Labor Secretary Acosta, who addressed the conference last year, told officials he will not be attending this year. Acosta, the highest-ranking Latino in the Trump administration, said he needed to remain in Washington for a policy rollout.

NALEO noted the two cancellations in a posting on its Twitter account: "NALEO NEWS: Republican Leadership @GOPChairwoman @SecretaryAcosta Opt Out of Engaging Nation's Largest Gathering of Latino Policymakers at NALEO 35th Annual Conference #NALEOConf18."
