Former United Nations official Richard Grenell is being considered for the role of U.S. ambassador to Germany, Politico reports.
President Donald Trump had reportedly planned to make Grenell his ambassador to NATO, a position that would make him the highest-ranking gay man in the new administration, but Politico reported that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wants former Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in the post.
One source told Politico Grenell still has a chance for the NATO role, though, as the administration has disagreed about a number of ambassador jobs.
Grenell is the longest serving U.S. spokesman at the UN. He helped on Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign as a national-security and foreign-affairs spokesman. He also worked for Fox News as a contributor and is a prominent supporter of Trump’s.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told Politico in an email that there was, “nothing to announce at this time.” A representative for Grenell declined to comment.
