The far majority of Republicans think social media networks intentionally censor political viewpoints, according to the results of a new study.

Key findings in the Pew Research Center survey:

  • 85 percent of Republicans said it's likely social media sites censor political opinions.
  • 62 percent of Democrats said it's likely social media sites censor political opinions.
  • 43 percent of Americans think major technology companies support liberal views over conservative views, which breaks down to 64 percent of Republicans and 28 percent of Democrats.
  • 58 percent of Americans said they trust major technology companies to do the right thing "some of the time."
  • 51 percent of Americans said major technology companies should be regulated more than they are now, including 57 percent of Democrats and 44 percent of Republicans.

Tech companies such as Facebook and Twitter have been accused of censoring conservative viewpoints in recent years. Facebook even admitted that some of its employees kept conservative news out of its now defunct "trending topics" section.
