Republicans Propose Strict New Rules for House

The public has grown quite upset with closed-door activity in Congress, and the new Republican majority in the House has prepared rules to address those concerns. The new guidelines will make sure lawmakers record a vote when they want to raise the nation's debt ceiling, publish committee attendance records, ban former members from lobbying in the House gym and require new mandatory spending to be offset by cuts to other programs, Politico reports.

republican, new, house, rulesThe rules changes, described in a summary given to House Republicans Wednesday, are set to be adopted Jan. 5, though they can be amended by the full Republican Conference on Jan. 4.

"These reforms represent Republicans' first step in keeping the promises we outlined in the Pledge to America to change the way Washington works and address the people’s priorities: creating jobs and cutting spending,” Incoming House Speaker John Boehner says in a statement accompanying the summary.
