A former leader of the Republican Party said Monday there were "telltale signs" that pointed to future problems with Donald Trump's presidency during the campaign, but Republicans looked the other way and elected him anyway.
Michael Steele, who served as Republican National Committee chair from 2009-2011, appeared on MSNBC's "All In With Chris Hayes" and addressed reports Trump divulged classified information to Russian officials during an Oval Office meeting last week.
"There were telltale signs of this on the Republican side and folks just chose to ignore it," Steele insisted. "You saw the signs."
The Washington Post reported Trump shared information about an Islamic State (ISIS) terror plot while he met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
The White House denied the report, but other news agencies — including The New York Times and BuzzFeed News — have independently verified it.
