Republican Congressman Mo Brooks is using audio from the Steve Scalise shooting in a new campaign ad to buoy his bid for the Senate.

Brooks is one of several GOP candidates in Alabama running to fill the seat vacated by Jeff Sessions to become attorney general.

Though just at the primary stage, Brooks used the ad to attack the "liberal media" for questioning him about the Second Amendment scant hours after the shooting that left Scalise, the No. 3 Republican in the House, critically injured.

Brooks, who was also on the baseball field that day practicing for the annual game against the Democrats, had previously said he would not bring up the shooting unless asked about it, The Hill reported.

Now, it's a 30-second spot that highlights Brooks' views on guns and the fact Brooks used his belt as a tourniquet to help one of the wounded that day.

"The Second Amendment, the right to bear arms, is there to ensure that we always have a republic. So no, I'm not changing my position on any of the rights we enjoy as Americans," Brooks says in the spot.
