Republican David Perdue has won the U.S. Senate race in Georgia, CNN projected, clinching an important prize for Republicans hoping to take majority control of the chamber.

Perdue, 64, a former chief executive of retailer Dollar General who is a newcomer to politics, outpolled Democrat Michelle Nunn, the daughter of former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, as well as Libertarian candidate Amanda Swafford.
