Rep. Jordan: Democrats Must Cut Spending to Avert Debt Showdown

By    |   Sunday, 06 January 2013 12:51 PM EST

While President Barack Obama and Democrats have received the revenue increases they wanted, they “have yet to cut one dime” in spending since voting for sequestration more than a year ago, Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Instead, Democrats keep promising to cut spending, Jordan said during a discussion with Maryland Democratic Rep. Chris Van Hollen.

“This is promises from politicians,” Jordan said. “It’s not a promise from your parents, from your pastor or from your priest. [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell’s exactly right. They just got revenue. We’ve got to cut spending. He’s exactly right. Let’s focus on the problem, which is, this government can’t control spending. We’ve got to get control of it so we can have a brighter future for Americans.”

Jordan compared Obama’s spending problem to that of an “18-year-old kid on a credit card.”

“We’ve got to stop the madness,” he said. “This is crazy. The only winners in this fiscal-cliff deal were Washington. They got more money.”

Regarding the gun-control bills introduced in Congress following the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Jordan said the issue should focus on the freedoms of — not restrictions on — the Second Amendment.

“More restrictions on law-abiding citizens is not going to prevent these kind of tragedies,” Jordan said. “Bad guys aren’t stupid, they’re just bad. They going to figure out a way . . . to get a firearm and use it.”
