The son of one the most important figures in Ronald Reagan’s political career and presidency is fast becoming the leading candidate to become secretary of the army under President Trump.

Sources at the White House told Newsmax on Friday that retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Michael Meese has emerged as Trump’s top choice for the top civilian position in the Army.

Speculation about Meese, son of Reagan's White House Counselor and Attorney General Ed Meese, began when Trump's first choice Vincent Viola withdrew his nomination after citing trouble disengaging from his business.

Gen. Meese served in Afghanistan as the top deputy at the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) for General David Petraeus and also served with U.S. forces in Iraq. He was also head of the Department of Social Science at West Point and, most recently, headed the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association to help veterans.

The names "Ed Meese" and "Ronald Reagan" have been linked for a half-century, since the elder Meese worked as a top staffer to then-California Gov. Reagan in Sacramento. He served as one of the three top aides to President Reagan in his first term and was later U.S. Attorney General.
