As House Democrats have opened an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., is selling t-shirts off the effort, from a statement she made when she entered office in January 2017.

Tlaib tweeted the merchandise that reads "Impeach the MF."

"Lean in with me to hold this lawless President accountable. Together, we will fight back and protect our democracy. Our country depends on it! ...and yes you can even wear what you feel"

The statement was made by Tlaib well before Democrats made claims they had material to impeach President Trump, perhaps showing the crusade of a witch hunt the president has rebuked it as such.

"We're going to go in and impeach the motherf***er," Tlaib said just hours after being sworn into office.

Some on social media accused Tlaib of making light of the impeachment inquiry. Others on Twitter and Facebook, as well as a leading national writer based in Detroit, were far more harsh toward what some described as an obvious money-making scheme.

But she defended herself on Friday, tweeting, "Impeachment is serious — I know this. But it is a mistake to try to equate T-shirts with the destruction of our democracy or try to paint those who've risked out safety calling for it, as not taking it seriously.

"If there is anyone who takes impeachment seriously it is myself & the people I fight for every day," she continued. "Whether or not you agree with the expression, the T-shirts are to bring levity to my supporters."

Best-selling author Mitch Albom, author of "Tuesdays with Morrie," took Tlaib to task in the Detroit Free Press.

"We should expect our leaders to take a high ground — especially when one of them won’t. That’s why they were elected. To set examples. To show the way," Albom wrote.

"Not to make money off a profane slogan. In the category of 'getting things done,' that ranks pretty low."
