Daily Caller's Matt Lewis: Rand Paul's Had to 'Evolve and Adapt'

By    |   Wednesday, 17 September 2014 08:11 PM EDT

Sen. Rand Paul has evolved his political ideology over the past year to keep up with fast-changing world events, even though he denies it, according to Matt Lewis, a senior contributor for The Daily Caller and contributing editor for The Week.

"Rand Paul is kind of the victim of the times. A couple of years ago — even a year ago, maybe — Rand Paul's more libertarian, non-interventionist foreign policy looked good," Lewis said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"When we were complaining about drones and the NSA surveillance, Rand Paul had the wind at his back," Lewis said.

Then things started changing.

"All of a sudden you have Russia invading Crimea and being provocative toward Ukraine, you have the ISIS threat, the beheading of journalists, and Rand Paul has a choice," he said.

"He can either stick to what would seem to become unpopular positions or he can change. It's not surprising to me that he's had to evolve and adapt. The interesting point is that he denies that he is doing it.

"He can easily say the circumstances change, but instead he essentially argues that we are going crazy," Lewis said.
