Rachel Maddow admitted Wednesday night that the two pages of President Donald Trump's 2005 tax returns she bared on her MSNBC show contained no earth-shaking revelations.
"Was there a huge, damning bombshell in these tax returns? No," Maddow said during an appearance on NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."
But, she added: "The bombshell here is that some of his tax returns were made public for the first time when he's been trying so hard to keep them secret.
"The reason you want any president's tax returns is because you want to know if he's beholden to anybody. You want to know if he might be acting as president with divided loyalties."
Maddow's confession that there were no explosive scoops in the tax returns came after she teased the revelation that she would reveal them on her Tuesday night program.
On the show, she revealed that Trump paid $38 million in federal income taxes on a reported income of $150 million and wrote off more than $100 million in business losses in 2005.
The lack of pizazz in the report triggered a Twitter storm in which some accused her of overhyping the information.
