Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vázquez Garced on Tuesday issued an endorsement for President Donald Trump in his reelection campaign, calling on Puerto Ricans to support the president.
"I ask all Puerto Ricans who are listening to go vote," the governor, who is a Republican, told Telemundo in an interview. "They have to go to vote, exercise their right to vote and evaluate who has represented being a person who thinks about Puerto Ricans and their needs at the most difficult moment: It is Donald Trump."
Vázquez Garced had previously intended to appear with Trump at a campaign event in Central Florida last week, but that was canceled after the president was diagnosed with COVID-19, according to Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día.
The Trump administration announced last month Puerto Rico would receive $13 billion in additional aid to help fix the territory’s infrastructure, which was badly damaged in 2017 by Hurricane Maria.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden's campaign ripped Trump for claiming a victory by providing additional aid several years after the natural disaster took place.
"This is clearly a desperate, political stunt to win over Puerto Rican supporters," said Tatiana Matta, the Biden campaign's Latino adviser, in a statement, according to The Hill. "For the thousands of families who had to leave the island, for all those we've lost, for those who still struggle everyday to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table, it is three years too little and too late."
