Report: NH Sen. Hassan's Foul-Mouthed Intern Suspended

The congressional intern who yelled an expletive at President Donald Trump inside the Capitol rotunda last week works for Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H. — and has reportedly been suspended for the "disgusting behavior."

Hassan's office said the intern was suspended for a week for shouting "f– you" at the president, and will also have restricted access to the Capitol during her internship, The Hill reported.

"Look, it's disgusting behavior, and all I'll say is it's nothing I'd tolerate in my staff, and I hope Sen. Hassan does the right thing," Gov. Chris Sununu, R-N.H., told WMUR.

He said he would "absolutely" have fired her had she been his intern.

Hassan's communications director Aaron Jacobs called the incident a "breach of office policies regarding respectful and appropriate conduct," WMUR reported.

Hassan defended the punishment as appropriate Tuesday, telling The Washington Post's Sean Sullivan the intern — identified in multiple media outlets as Caitlin Marriott — "took full responsibility" for her actions.

"This behavior shouldn't be equated with the president's destructive and divisive actions," Hassan said, pointing to the Trump administration's efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and practice of separating migrant families at the southern border.

"And this young woman immediately accepted responsibility for her actions and is facing consequences for them," Hassan told the Post. "The president is doing neither."
