President Donald Trump, knowing that he has to work with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as Congress faces a week where lawmakers need to pass a budget, picked up the phone on Saturday and called the Senate leader, Axios reported Sunday.

Trump especially wants to see tax reform as a part of that budget, which, if Congress fails to address it, could mean no budget or tax reform legislation, a move that could spell trouble for lawmakers at election time.

The information that's put before the media and what takes place behind the scenes are often two different things. Trump often takes aim at individuals on Twitter, and McConnell has at times been the target of his tweets.

However, according to Axios, the conversation between the two men on Saturday was "productive" and they "bonded" over efforts they both have initiated to nominate and confirm conservative judges across the country.

And, according to the article, Trump and McConnell speak more often than has been leaked to the press, with judges and tax reform as frequent topics. They also trade whip counts on upcoming votes in Congress.

The two are scheduled to have lunch on Monday. While Trump's ferocious tweets may continue, the two men need to find a way to agree on a truce if they want to succeed on the legislative end. In the meantime, Trump may court Democrats Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in his effort to secure his legislative goals.
