Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dismissed as “ludicrous” a New York Times report that the FBI began to investigate whether President Donald Trump was a national security threat after he axed former bureau director James Comey.

In an interview Sunday on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Pompeo curtly shut down a request to comment on the explosive report.

“I will say this, the notion that President Trump is a threat to national security is ludicrous,” he said.

Pressed on the issue, Pompeo brushed off the query, declaring “the idea contained in the New York Times story… is silly on the face and not worthy of a response.”

Pompeo also addressed the controversial ordered withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria, calling the drawdown a “tactical change.”

“Roughly the 2000 uniform soldiers in Syria today” are being withdrawn, he said. “The activity is under way. We will do so orderly to protect national security,” adding it’s “a way to continue the important mission they were on — the counter terrorism mission.”

“This is a tactical change. The mission remains the same,” he insisted.

Also asked about the detention of Navy veteran Michael White in Iran, and efforts to free him, Pompeo said the United States is doing all it can, but declined specifics.

“We have great sympathy for all Americans detained across the world,” he said. “We do everything we can to get them home. We use our diplomatic tools to get these young men and women home. We're intent to do that in Iran and across the world. We take this obligation as a solemn one. We have had quite a few successes and I hope we have more.”
