Poll: Majority Approve Opening House Impeachment Inquiry

Fifty-eight percent of Americans approve of the decision to begin an impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump while 38% disapprove, according to a Washington Post-Schar School poll.

The number of those supporting the inquiry in an August poll was 49%, compared to 46% who were against it.

Here are how the new poll results, released Tuesday, break down:

  • 27% of Republicans say they favor the impeachment inquiry, while 71% oppose it.
  • 86% of Democrats approve of the inquiry, compared to 11% who are against it.
  • 57% of independents favor the inquiry, while 38% oppose it.
  • 60% say the president does not uphold adequate standards for ethics in government, compared to 35% who say he does.
  • 47% believe if Joe Biden became president, he would uphold adequate standards for ethics in government, while 38% say he would not.
  • 33% approve of the way Republicans in Congress have responded to the inquiry, while 56% disapprove.
  • 49% approve of the way congressional Democrats have handled in inquiry. While 44% disapprove.

The poll, conducted Oct. 1-6, surveyed 1,007 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
