A little more than a third of American voters feel good about Hillary Clinton's choice of Tim Kaine as her running mate, according to the results of a new poll.

The Gallup survey finds that 35 percent of voters rated Kaine as either an "excellent" or "pretty good" choice. That figure is two percentage points lower than what Donald Trump's running mate Mike Pence received in a similar poll last week.

Forty-nine percent rated Kaine as "only fair" or "poor," compared to the 45 percent that said the same about Pence.

Kaine, a senator from Virginia, had far better numbers in the poll from Democrats than he did from Republicans. Sixty-two percent of left-leaning voters said he is "excellent" or "pretty good," while just 15 percent of Republicans said the same.

Kaine earned positive numbers from 32 percent of independents.

Other key findings from the poll:
  • 61 percent have never heard of Kaine or don't know enough about him to provide an opinion about him.
  • 24 percent hold favorable view of Kaine, 3 points better than Pence's rating of 21 percent.
  • 77 percent said Kaine has no effect on swaying voters to vote for Clinton in November.
  • 47 percent said Kaine is qualified to serve as president if that becomes necessary.
Clinton announced Kaine as her running mate last week.

A separate Gallup poll found Clinton's unfavorable rating has hit an all-time low of 57 percent of U.S. voters.
