Poll: 56 Percent of Americans Want to See Tax Hikes for Large Corporations

A majority of Americans want tax increases for large corporations and for the wealthy, according to a new CBS News poll.

Here are the highlights from the survey:

• 56 percent want tax increases for large corporations, while 17 percent say the taxes should be cut. 24 percent want taxes on large corporations kept the same.
• 58 percent say the wealthy should have their taxes increased, while 12 percent say they should be reduced. 29 percent believe taxes on the wealthy should be kept the same.
• 4 percent want taxes on small businesses increased, compared to 68 percent who want them cut. Another 27 percent want taxes on small businesses kept the same.
• 3 percent say they want taxes on the middle class increased, while 60 percent want the taxes decreased. 36 percent say they should be kept the same.

CBS News noted most do not believe any tax cuts that help large corporations would help them personally.

Here is how the rest of the survey breaks down:

• 54 percent of those polled believe cutting taxes in general would help grow the economy, while 40 percent do not.
• 77 percent of Republicans say reducing the tax rate would help the economy, compared to 17 percent who do not.
• 42 percent of Democrats believe cutting taxes would help the economy grow, while 54 percent disagree.
• 49 percent of independents say reducing the tax rate would help the economy, compared to 44 percent who disagree.

The poll, which surveyed 1,109 people, was conducted Oct. 27-30. The total results have a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
