President Donald Trump and the Republican Party are polling very poorly among Latinos, with nearly two-thirds of registered voters (64 percent) preferring to see a Democratic majority in Congress and just one-fifth (21 percent) preferring a Republican one, according to the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll.
While that might signal trouble this November for Republicans and the White House, Latino interest im participating in the vote is lower than other groups, NBC reported.
"Latinos also still report less interest in the upcoming midterms than the electorate as a whole, presenting a challenge for Democrats as they try to mobilize a coalition that can win in diverse districts nationwide," according to NBC.
"The unpopularity of Trump and his political positions among Latinos could give Democrats a boost in the 2018 midterms — if Latino voters go to the polls in November."
Other findings from the poll:
- Just 26 percent of registered Latino voters approve of the job President Trump is doing.
- 65 percent disapprove, including 50 percent strongly disapproving.
- Just 43 percent of Latinos under 40 express a high interest in November's midterms.
The NBC/WSJ/Telemundo poll surveyed 300 registered Latino voters Sept. 16-19 in both English and Spanish, with a margin of error of plus or minus 5.66 percent.
