Americans are greatly divided along party lines when it comes to President Donald Trump's effect on the country's position in the world, recent CBS News polling shows.
Respondents were asked to say if they thought the United States' position in the world is stronger, weaker, or unchanged under Trump.
- 32 percent think the U.S. is stronger
- 9 percent think the U.S. is weaker
- 16 percent think Trump hasn't had much effect
When broken down by party, the results show a clear divide between Republicans and Democrats.
- 72 percent of Republicans think the U.S. is stronger under Trump
- 76 percent of Democrats think the U.S. is weaker under Trump
- 51 percent of independents think the U.S. is weaker under Trump
Republicans also tend to think it's more important for people around the globe to respect the U.S. for its military strength than to like the country for its policies, as Democrats and Independents tend to think.
Respect for military strength was favored by:
- 39 percent of respondents
- 59 percent of Republicans
- 26 percent of Democrats
- 38 percent of independents
Admiration for policies was favored by:
- 49 percent of respondents
- 28 percent of Republicans
- 64 percent of Democrats
- 38 percent of independents
When it comes to foreign policy, most Americans would prefer that the U.S. attempt to negotiate with other countries, while the minority think the U.S. should only do whatever's best for itself.
- 64 percent favor negotiation.

- 43 percent of Republicans favor negotiation.
- 57 percent favor what's best for the U.S.
- 80 percent of Democrats favor negotiation.
- 20 percent favor what's best for the U.S.
- 64 percent of independents favor negotiation.

The polls were conducted between Jan. 13-16, 2018, Oct. 27-30, 2017, and Jan. 10-12, 2018 with a margin of error of 3, 4, and 2.6 percentage points, respectively.
