Daily Mail Poll: Trump Surges to 4-Point Lead on Biden

By    |   Tuesday, 26 December 2023 10:11 AM EST

President Joe Biden's support is falling among Democrats and women as former President Donald Trump picked up independent voters and extended his lead to 4 points in the 2024 presidential election in the latest DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners poll.

Another Daily Mail poll last month also showed that Biden is losing to Trump in two of three key battleground states Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin, according to the report.

"Voters might think Trump is guilty of the charges he has put to him, including a sizable chunk of Republicans, but his record in his first term means he is still attracting support," J.L. Partners pollster James Johnson told the Daily Mail. "But look closer and it becomes clear that Trump's lead is more because of Biden weakness than Trump strength.

"Biden has taken a particular hit amongst 18- 29-year-old women, and suffers from low enthusiasm amongst Black people, too. There is also a big chunk of undecideds – one in 10 of Biden 2020 voters – who might not like Biden but can't bring themselves to vote for Trump.

"The takeaway from this has to be that, come the election, the race will be tighter. As we end 2023, both candidates have it all to play for."

Trump leads Biden 40%-36% in the nationwide poll in a full field with third-party candidates and by 3 points head-to-head (46% to 43%, which is just inside the margin of error):

  1. Trump 40%
  2. Biden 36%
  3. Robert Kennedy Jr. 4%
  4. Cornel West 1%
  5. Green Party candidate Jill Stein less than 1%

There were 18% still undecided in the poll.

Trump trailed Biden by 2 points in the first edition of the Daily Mail poll in June, before leading by 1 point in September and October. The movement is partially due to momentum among independents, which has gone from a 4-point deficit for Trump to a 2-point lead in the latest edition, according to the report.

Biden once led Trump among women by 12 points, but that lead is now a virtual tie (2 points, which is within the margin of error).

The most popular word to describe Biden in the poll was "nothing," followed by "economy" and "peace." The top words to describe Trump in the poll were "revenge" and "power."

"It distills the essence of this campaign pretty accurately," pollster Matt Lewis wrote in the analysis.

J.L. Partners polled 984 likely voters nationwide for the Daily Mail, and the results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
