Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by 9 points in Michigan, extending her position there by 5 points in just three months, according to a new poll in The Detroit News.
In a state Clinton shockingly lost in the Democratic primary to Bernie Sanders, which fueled speculation of a potential shift in that race, Clinton looks poised to carry the state in November, leading Trump 41 percent to 32 percent.
The Michigan results:
- Clinton: 41 percent;
- Trump: 32 percent;
- Gary Johnson: 8 percent;
- Jill Stein: 3 percent;
- Undecided: 14 percent.
Further troubling for Trump is that Clinton leads in Republican strongholds in the west and southwest parts of the state, Detroit News reported.
"He's sitting in the cellar right now, and they're going to have to do something to dramatically turn this around," pollster Richard Czuba told the Detroit News. "If I were a Republican running on this ticket right now, I'd be beyond nervous."
Other results from the poll:
- 61 percent said Trump not qualified to be president;
- 57 percent said Clinton is qualified to be president;
- 67 percent of women said Trump not qualified to be president;
- Clinton's lead among women voters is 21 points.
President Obama won Michigan by 10 points in 2012, and a Republican has not carried Michigan in a general election since George Bush in 1988.
The poll surveyed 600 likely voters and has a margin of error of +/- 4 points.
