President Donald Trump is keeping his promise to put U.S. workers and industry first, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial board wrote Wednesday.

Politicians from both parties have been advocates of tariffs, the board wrote. "To pretend that they are suddenly beyond the pale and that only the economically ignorant would favor them is disingenuous in the extreme."

The U.S. is right to defend itself in a trade war, the board wrote.

"Fair trade, and roughly parity in trade, is not a retreat from the global economy. It is an insistence that when another player engages in foul or unfair play, we will respond."

Trump ran on the issue of defending American workers and going back on his promise now would be "ludicrous," the board wrote.

The board recognized that some tariffs would not bring the steel industry back to its former heights, but growth is possible, the board wrote.

"The idea is to tip the incentives, just a little, toward American workers."

On Wednesday, U.S. Steel announced that it would reopen part of an Illinois factory following Trump's decision to impose a new tariff on steel imports.
