Rep. Peter King said Wednesday that he opposed Bill Kristol's suggestion that National Review writer David French run for president as an independent candidate because it would hand Hillary Clinton the White House in November.
"I have great respect for him but disagree with him on this," the New York Republican told Wolf Blitzer on CNN.
Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, floated French, 47, a decorated Iraqi War veteran, on Tuesday. He also is a constitutional lawyer, author and major in the Army Reserve.
"David French, I don't know him at all, but I know his qualifications," King told Blitzer. "He's obviously a well-qualified guy and a gifted lawyer and a war veteran.
"He has no name identification, no money. As a third-party candidate — we are a two-party system, and all that would do is siphon enough votes from the Republicans and elect Hillary Clinton."
King added that "I would have been on Bill Kristol's side, but we lost. Donald Trump won. That's the reality.
"And if you're in a party, you should abide by the guy who wins it unless it's so outside the bounds — and Donald Trump is not."
