Pete King to Newsmax TV: Colin Powell Hasn't Supported a Republican Candidate Since 2004

By    |   Monday, 08 June 2020 03:22 PM EDT

Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., told Newsmax TV on Monday that former Secretary of State Colin Powell’s opposition to President Donald Trump doesn’t carry much weight since the retired general hasn’t supported the last three Republican candidates for president.

King told “The National Report” that he’s “really disappointed” in Powell, former President George W. Bush and Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, for coming out against Trump’s reelection “at this time, while there is so much unrest in the country,” adding that the Republicans “should try to stand united” and “should not be adding to it.”

The congressman also said that Powell, the Secretary of State under Bush, “hasn’t supported a Republican candidate for president since 2004,” when Bush ran for reelection, noting that Powell endorsed former President Barack Obama, a Democrat, over Republican candidates John McCain and Mitt Romney.

Bush, Powell and Romney have all come out against Trump’s reelection in the past week, with Powell officially endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday.

King said that “Trump’s style upsets” Bush, Romney, and other Republicans that are “part of the establishment,” though he did admit that “some of them do raise legitimate questions, but those are questions that should be asked behind closed doors.”
