Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., will ask Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to consider cutting back lawmakers’ annual August break in order to take up government spending bills, The Hill is reporting.
Senators still have on their agenda a border supplemental spending bill, defense authorization, a highway reauthorization and the annual appropriations bills, according to The Hill.
“We only have 19 working days between now and the end of July,” Perdue said.
“If we don’t stay here in August at least some of the time, it’s hard for me to believe we’re going to get all of this appropriated by Sept. 30,” he added, citing the end of the fiscal year.
The Hill noted Perdue and other lawmakers were successful in their efforts to shorten the recess in 2018. And it pointed out the Senate is even further behind schedule this year.
Roll Call quoted Perdue as saying: “My goal right now is to get (Health and Human Services) and Defense.” The two represent more than 70% of discretionary spending.
