Anyone suggesting Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday can buy some time for Republicans to investigate election fraud likely is avoiding the inevitable, according to Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., on Newsmax TV.
Pence, as president of the Senate, will be the presiding officer when a joint session of Congress meets to certify the Electoral College votes to determine the outcome of the presidential election
On Monday's Stinchfield, host Grant Stinchfield asked Johnson if Pence could "buy some time" for Republicans, who want to investigate the election allegations further.
"I don’t know the legality of that," Johnson said. "Again, I think I understand what the result of this is going to be if we object. Both bodies retire to their chambers, we have two hours of debate and then we vote. Every member votes.
"A little misinformation on the right is that it immediately reverts to that ‘votes by the states’ where [Republicans] have an advantage. No. Every member of Congress will vote whether or not to accept that state’s electors. And again, I have a hard time imagining a scenario where any Democrats are going to vote to disallow the electors of Joe Biden."
President Donald Trump has alleged that voter fraud in several key battleground states gave the election to Biden.
Johnson admitted it was "pretty late in the process" and state legislatures would need to get involved to truly investigate fraud allegations.
"The mainstream press likes to say, 'There is no evidence,'" Johnson said. "That's because you haven’t looked.
"Courts don’t want to get involved in these election cases so they just dismiss them."
Johnson said he would like a 10-day emergency investigation to lay out the facts before the American people.
"We'd have to pass in the Senate, which would require 60 votes, and then we'd have to ask [Speaker of the House] Nancy Pelosi to do it as well," Johnson said. "Again, the odds are very long, there's no doubt about it. I recognize reality."
