Protesters Dump Glitter on Pawlenty in San Francisco

By    |   Friday, 17 June 2011 12:55 PM EDT

Protesters gave Republican presidential hopeful Tim Pawlenty a different perspective on being among the GOP glitterati when they showered him with the same type of confetti that another protester tossed on former House Speaker Newt Gingrich a few weeks ago.

The former Minnesota governor was signing books at an American Health Insurance conference Thursday in San Francisco when two women supporting Reproductive Rights and CODEPINK doused him in pink glittery confetti.

Lamenting that Pawlenty doesn’t have “the courage to stand up for gay rights and women’s reproductive rights,” the pair dumped the confetti upon him, and one of the women continued to heckle him mercilessly as an officer ushered her away.

Story continues below video.

In 2010, Pawlenty vetoed a Minnesota bill that would have ensured gay couples were entitled to the remains of a deceased partner. “Marriage — defined as between a man and woman — should remain elevated in our society at a special level, as it traditionally has been,” Pawlenty said of the “Final Wishes” bill.

“I opposed efforts to treat domestic relationships as the equivalent of traditional marriage. Accordingly, I am opposed to this bill,” he said of the legislation, which would have allowed domestic partners the legal right to sue in cases of wrongful death.
