Speaker Ryan: GOP Will Push Successes For Midterms

By    |   Wednesday, 25 July 2018 10:52 AM EDT

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday he's working to make sure Republicans don't lose the House in this year's midterm elections by telling the "story of what we've done."

"Two years ago, House Republicans ran on a platform called 'A Better Way,' and then along with the newly elected President [Donald] Trump, guess what we did, we did what we said we were going to do, kept promises and enacted a promising agenda that's now occurring," the Wisconsin Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."

As a result, the United States is stronger at home and abroad, is rebuilding the military, confronting the opioid crisis, and "fixing things so we can improve people's lives," said Ryan.

Further, there are "more job openings for  people looking for work in America today," he said. "Wages are up, the economy is soaring. These are good things and great results to run on.'

In comparison, Democrats want to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE], get rid of private health insurance, and to have the government take over healthcare, said Ryan.

"They are going so far left," he added. "I think we have a great contrast, a really good track record and good story to tell, and that's what we will be telling this fall."

Meanwhile, House Republicans this week plan to finish out the Defense Authorization bill and will finish out the Career and Technical Education Bill on Wednesday.

"When we come back, we will work on making tax cuts permanent...we are excited about getting the infrastructure bills as well," said Ryan.

Ryan also will be speaking with the president on Wednesday about several issues, including how to get the appropriations process back on track so there is not a giant omnibus appropriation bill at the end of the year.

"We really just want to get the military funded on time, on budget, on schedule this year and that's the primary concern," said Ryan.

Lawmakers also are working on the president's latest request for $5 billion for the border wall, said Ryan.

"The administration in this current fiscal year asked for $1.6 billion," he added. "That has been funded and those dollars are being spent. That construction is now occurring. So there is money being spent on the wall on the border."
