House Speaker Paul Ryan says he can't endorse Donald Trump just yet — but there's no way the Wisconsin Republican can sit on the fence much longer, his home state newspaper says.

"Based on everything we know about them, it's hard to imagine Paul Ryan endorsing Donald Trump. But it's even harder to imagine him not doing it," writes Craig Gilbert, Washington bureau chief of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"When Ryan agreed to be House speaker last fall, he took a job that's famous for ending careers, that came with the baggage of a divided party and divided government."

"One of the few political benefits was that it gave Ryan an excuse for staying out of a wild and ugly fight for the GOP nomination. That's gone now. Ryan's party is nominating the Republican most likely to make him squirm, and neutrality isn't an option."

Trump's behavior in the next few weeks may be a factor.

"Trump could 'behave' and work 'constructively' with House Republicans in ways that make it all but impossible for Ryan not to endorse him," Gilbert says.

"Or Trump could be Trump, and do and say things that make their political embrace that much harder for Ryan than it is already."
