Rep. Gosar Joins Effort to Oust Speaker Johnson

By    |   Friday, 19 April 2024 01:21 PM EDT

Arizona GOP Rep. Paul Gosar on Friday joined the ranks of conservatives trying to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The lawmaker signed on to Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's proposal to boot Johnson after Democrats cast the necessary votes to start debate on a multipart foreign aid plan that has riled the GOP's right flank, Politico reported.

Gosar followed Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., in supporting Greene.

The House vote was 316-94 to bring up the four-bill package that includes aid for Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel.

Among the naysayers were 55 Republicans — normally enough to scuttle a deal, but 165 Democrats voted to bring them up, Politico reported — an alliance that could trigger GOP calls to strip Johnson of his gavel.

The House is set to vote on the bills Saturday afternoon; Politico reported Johnson will need help from Democrats to get the package over to the Senate.

Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., on Friday said he plans to support the package; Sen. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., declined to preview his vote, Politico reported.

“I’m pleased that we were able to come to a bipartisan agreement,” House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole, R-Okla., said, the outlet reported. “It’s working out the way the speaker wanted it to, which is that every member is free to vote their conscience … in a way they usually aren’t.”

GOP Texas Rep. Michael Burgess, the chair of the Rules Committee, conceded that “It’s not satisfactory,” and that Republicans should have been able to provide the votes on their own, Politico reported.
