Toomey Voted for Cruz, Bad Sign for Trump

Republican Sen. Pat Toomey voted for Ted Cruz in the Pennsylvania primary, according to a report in The Washington Post.

Post writer Chris Cillizza suggests the vote, and his public announcement of it in a video, is "well thought out and smartly calculated."

Toomey's choice could be typical among Republican candidates, as it illustrates "a lesser of two evils," according to Cillizza, and also, "he wanted to make sure everyone in Pennsylvania knew he didn't vote for Trump."

He won his seat in 2010 by a slight margin, despite that being a year of big wins by Republicans in Pennsylvania — a state that has voted for a Democratic candidate for president in every election between 1992 and 2012, according to the Post.

In The Morning Call, Toomey explained why he supported Cruz, saying he's a "solid conservative," who has a "real viable shot" at defeating Hillary Clinton for president.

Toomey is one of the few in the Senate who supports Cruz, according to the Dallas Morning News.

While Cruz may be too conservative for voters in Philadelphia, Toomey appears to have decided that a vote for Trump would be "indefensible," Cillizza writes.

Toomey has said he would support the eventual GOP nominee, and if that is Trump, Cillizza notes he will "have to answer questions daily" until he has to publicly say that he supports Trump.

Toomey's choice for the "least bad option" points out the difficult decisions facing Republicans running for re-election this year, Cillizza writes.

Democrats believe Toomey is one lawmaker who is vulnerable in his re-election bid, according to CNN.

According to Philly.com, Toomey now faces Democratic female candidate Katie McGinty in his re-election bid, which could mirror the presidential race of Clinton vs. the Republican candidate.
