Students from a Parkland, Florida, high school where a gunman killed 17 people stepped up their call for a ban on assault and semi-automatic weapons Sunday after a man fatally shot four at a Tennessee Waffle House.
In a four-part tweet, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Emma González wrote "shootings don't just happen in schools."
She declared removing "assault and semi-automatic weapons" from "civilian society," and implementing thorough background checks and mandatory waiting periods are among the ways to "stop shootings in America."
She also predicted the NRA would declare the gunman had mental health issues — and use it to drive up gun sales.
Fellow Stoneman Douglas student Cameron Kasky called for an ultimate "curing" of the "epidemic of gun violence in our country."
He also retweeted a post by entrepreneur Michael Skolnik that listed the shootings that have been carried out by someone with an AR-15.
Student Jaclyn Corin tweeted AR-15 firearms "attack with the same firepower used by highly-trained infantry troops," and because of their power they do not "belong in the hands of normal civilians."
