Hoping to turn social media apps and websites into a useful tool for law enforcement in lieu of their growing ability to feed bad ideas into the minds of the impressionable, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is calling on kids and parents to report suspicious social media behavior.
"If I can say just one thing about this: If all our kids are on Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and if your child sees something, they have to take it seriously," Bondi told "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y.
"I would rather you call it in as a parent or as a child and be wrong 100 percent of the time, than not call it in. If you see . . . someone saying 'I want to shoot up a school,' 'I want to blow up at school' … 'I'm going to do something horrible to somebody,' you have to take it seriously. Don't be afraid to call it in. We want you to call it in."
Bondi echoed the comments she made on Fox News' "The Story" on Friday, two days after the school shooting that left 17 staff and students dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Bondi says the FBI and Director Christopher Wray have a "lot of explaining to do" after failing to act on tips of the danger of the eventual Florida shooter.
"The men and women of the FBI report to him, and we need to find out exactly what happened that could have saved 17 lives and many, many injuries and thousands of kids who will be traumatized for the rest of their lives," Bondi told host Martha MacCallum.
Security at schools "will be a question for the future as to what happens next," Bondi told host John Catsimatidis.
"I firmly believe we need more security at our schools to protect our children," she added. "We live in a different world now than we used to. Times have changes . . . it's not just guns, they can go on the Internet and learn how to make a bomb that could kill hundreds of people. So there are so many different ways to hurt people, and it's just tragic."
