Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has announced her support for Rep. Jeff Flake in his hotly-contested Senate primary battle against businessman Wil Cardon in the U.S. Senate race.
“The United States Senate needs a leader like Jeff Flake,” Palin said in a statement released by Flake’s campaign Monday. “Jeff is a proven conservative crusader, and today I am proud to announce my support for his campaign . . . Throughout his tenure in Congress, Jeff has been a consistent leader against the federal government’s out of control spending.”
Palin lauded a Flake press release titled “Just How Broke Are We?” that discussed the government’s $15 trillion debt “in everyday terms,” she said. For the past eight years, the National Taxpayers Union has ranked Flake No. 1 in the House for his efforts to cut wasteful spending, according to Palin.
“Credited by many as the leading anti-earmark crusader in the House, Jeff has fought hard against pork barrel spending – often times casting one of the few GOP ‘no’ votes on bloated spending measures,” Palin said.
“He’s not afraid to ‘go rogue’ against his own party and its leadership. And even though he has sometimes suffered the consequences from GOP leaders for failing to toe the party line, he continues to fight for what is right.
Palin notes that she herself is all about reform. “Jeff is just the sort of ‘relentless reformer’ we need in the Senate,” she said. “He will bring his fight against our crippling debt, reckless spending, and wasteful earmarks to the Senate.”
Palin has backed candidates in several Republican primaries this year, and most of them won.
