Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, on Monday said "every American adult should immediately receive $1,000" as the coronavirus outbreak wreaks havoc on the U.S. economy.
"Every American adult should immediately receive $1,000 to help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy," Romney told The New York Times' Jonathan Martin.
Romney also released a list of proposals to help combat the coronavirus outbreak's impact on the economy.
"Every American adult should immediately receive a one-time check for $1,000 to help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy," reads the senator's first proposal. "Congress took similar action during the 2001 and 2008 recessions. While expansions of paid leave, unemployment insurance, and SNAP benefits are crucial, the check will help fill the gaps for Americans that may not quickly navigate different government options."
He also suggests providing bridge grants from the Small Business Association "to qualified small businesses that apply but don't receive Economic Injury Disaster Loans."
Romney proposes two steps to protect students. The first, to "amend the Higher Education Act's 'Cost of Attendance' to take into account" unexpected expenses that arose from the outbreak, such as travel, housing and storage. The second, to defer student loan payments for recent graduates "for a period of time."
The senator also suggests insurance plans be required to temporarily cover Telehealth for health workers and patients for services related to the coronavirus.
