Senate Hopeful Gibbons Claims 'Bulk of Trump Supporters' Back Him

By    |   Monday, 07 May 2018 03:02 PM EDT

Mike Gibbons, who is vying for the Republican nomination for senator in Ohio, argued Monday that he's also been a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, even if the president has endorsed his opponent, Rep. Jim Renacci.

"I think my opponent, Jim Renacci, has taken it to an extreme and said, 'The president said he wants me as his senator, therefore, you should vote for me,'" Gibbons told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

Gibbons pointed out that he co-chaired Trump's campaign fundraising in Ohio, and "gave him the largest personal donation I've ever given to a candidate," as well as making hundreds of calls for him.

"He also offered me a job in the administration and I was competing for one, when I decided to run," said Gibbons.

The Cleveland businessman further said he has the "bulk of the Trump supporters" on his side, and has been endorsed by the Citizens for Trump organization.

"I had a robocall last night with the chairman of Women for Trump," said Gibbons. "I think Donald Trump will be just fine with me."

Further, he commented that Renacci was recruited by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and has served four terms in Congress, so he is not an outsider.

"Mitch McConnell has donated $10,000 to his campaign," said Gibbons. "He doesn't want me in office. He doesn't think I will be responding as cooperatively as he would like somebody to respond if I get to the Senate. I can certainly be a team player but I'll vote on the basis of my principles and what I told the voters I will do."
