Several House Democrats introduced bills Tuesday that would stop offshore drilling in the waters surrounding the United States.

According to The Hill, the bills target offshore drilling in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans, along with portions of the Gulf of Mexico that are controlled by the U.S.

The pieces of legislation call for either a ban or a 10-year moratorium from oil and natural gas drilling in the aforementioned areas.

The House Natural Resources Committee released a separate statement about the bills and cheered the lawmakers for writing them.

"Today's bills are about a cleaner, more sustainable future for our country," said committee chairman Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz. "We can create clean energy jobs and protect our coastlines at the same time with the right policy choices. The American people don't want oil rigs on every beach up and down our coasts, and our economy doesn't need them.

"Doubling down on offshore drilling would be a huge mistake, and we're proud to work together to make sure we take a better course."

The Trump administration has pushed to expand offshore drilling off America's coasts. In November, the National Marine Fisheries Service approved permits for five companies to use air guns for seismic surveys in the Atlantic in the hunt for more oil and gas.
